7:30pm - 9:00pm Hindusthani Classical Music on Sarod and Tabla by Soumya Chakraverty and Debu Nayak
This session will feature a 90-min presentation of Indian classical instrumental music on Sarod and Tabla. The entire performance will consist of presentation of a few Ragas (North Indian melodies). Each Raga may have a few movements set to different rhythm cycles (Talas).
Each piece usually starts with a slow, meditative unfolding of the melody on the Sarod. This is known as the Aalap. After the Aalap is concluded, the music moves onto the rhythm portion, where the Tabla (Indian hand drums) joins in. The presentation revolves around a central composition, referred to as a Bandish or melody that is set to the Raga and a specific Tala. The tempo starts slow and gradually builds up.
It is key to point out that Indian classical music is very improvisational. Each note or phrase played by the artist is based on their momentary imagination and mood. Very little is preset or rehearsed. Therefore, playing this form of music not only requires supreme command of the instruments and knowledge of the musical form, but also deep concentration and meditation. Each note or syllable are like characters in a play and tell a story. The audience is immersed in the music and taken on a journey. The performance usually ends on a fast piece or crescendo, usually referred to as the Jhala. This is like the release of the energy after a lengthy build-up.
